Over the years she has taken her tortoises to Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue and another rescue center in Tehachapi. Some of them, about 40, she said, were offspring of tortoises she found on local roadways. Joyce has also had baby tortoises left in a box on her doorstep.

Some tortoises, like Baby (who’s a boy), Cinco (a girl), Toto and Malibu, Joyce decided to hang onto. She even had a tortoise named Methuselah who, she estimated,tiffany bracelets on sale, was more than 100 years old. Methuselah and his mate, Sarah, were among the tortoises taken to Tehachapi.

"I never thought I’d be attached, but I miss my old Methuselah," she said. "He’d come when I’d call him. (And) he dug a hole under a rock and lived there."

Warren’s tortoises have found good homes, but according to David Lamfrom, local field representative for the National Parks Conservation Association, because they are an endangered species,shop for tiffany cuff Links, tortoises shouldn’t be removed from the wild. If people come across a tortoise in the middle of the road, they should be helped across the street, he said.

According to Lamfrom, who’s heard of Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue, said taking captive tortoises to a rescue center is a good way of finding a better home for them. Because captive tortoises often carry an upper respiratory disease that can be passed to their wild counterparts, people should never release them into the wild. People can also view wild tortoises at the Mojave National Preserve, he said.

"The Mojave National Preserve is a great place for wild tortoises especially during the spring wildflower bloom," he said.

Warren, who’s a member of the High Desert branch of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club, is also wary of people who say they’d like to have them as a pet.

"Most everyone says I would love to have one for my kid," she said. "I say it’s not a play thing."

The 19th Century church has been closed since September 2008 because structural problems rendered it unsafe.

Since then the congregation has been meeting in the village school.

Last month, the diocese sent letters to interested parties in the village saying that it was proposing closing the church,buy tiffany bracelets, and any proceeds from its sale would be used to provide a new place of worship.

More than 30 people attended the meeting of Middleton St George Parish Council on Monday night to express their concerns at the proposals.

The residents were upset that there was no representative from the church present to answer their questions.

Council chairwoman Doris Jones said: "This does raise more questions than answers and I think we’ve got to admit that.

"It’s put us in a very difficult situation because we’ve been put here to consult but we can’t because we don’t know what’s what."

Many villagers were worried that the grade II-listed church would be demolished to make way for a house or flats.

One resident said: "If they do decide that they want a new church, we don’t want a modern brick building otherwise we’re going to lose all the history."

People also questioned whether there were enough church funds to repair the present building and what had happened to money that people had donated for its repair.

Former church warden Bill Maybrey said: "If no one says anything, at a stroke of a pen 150 years of history will be wiped off. Apart from being a beautiful building, the church is a focal point of our village."

It was agreed that representatives from the church would be invited to a public meeting where they could address villagers’ concerns.

A steering group was also set up by residents to fight the proposals and a petition was also planned.

Councillor Jones added:

"There’s a lot more to a church and its worship than its bricks and mortar, but we’ve still got to preserve our historic values in rural areas."

Yesterday, Bill Heslop, the diocese’s churches secretary,buy tiffany earrings, said: "There are no plans and the future is still to be reviewed. It’s a slow process and there’s eight months’ consultation,buy tiffany key rings, it’s a long time. Nothing has been decided yet."

Michelle A. Connors, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts each of theft and receiving stolen property in connection with taking $163,358.93 from Mary O'Connell.

Judge Jacqueline L. Russell, who accepted Connors' plea,]]> A Girardville woman admitted Thursday in Schuylkill County Court that she stole more than $163,000 from an elderly Shenandoah woman from 2006 through 2008.

Michelle A. Connors, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts each of theft and receiving stolen property in connection with taking $163,358.93 from Mary O’Connell.

Judge Jacqueline L. Russell, who accepted Connors’ plea,tiffany, did not immediately sentence her,necklaces, instead ordering a presentence investigation. Russell did not set a sentencing date, but said she definitely would need more information before approving the plea.

"I had questions about the plea," Russell said. "I need more information to justify whether this is an appropriate sentence."

Neither prosecutors nor James G. Conville, Schuylkill Haven, Connors’ lawyer, would say what the proposed sentence under the plea agreement would be.

Russell could reject the agreement, in which case Connors would either withdraw her plea and take the case to trial or allow the judge to impose any sentence permissible under the law. The maximum possible sentence would be 14 years in a state correctional institution and $30,000 in fines.

Connors remains free on $5,000 bail pending sentencing. She said nothing while leaving Russell’s courtroom, and people with her tried to obstruct photographers attempting to take her picture.

Shenandoah police and the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit charged Connors with taking the money from O’Connell, who was 89 when the incidents allegedly started, between November 2006 and September 2008.

Investigators said the thefts occurred while Connors had power of attorney for O’Connell.

Connors took over the woman’s assets, which totaled $222,692.61,tiffany, in November 2006 and had control of the money until Sept. 11, 2008, prosecutors said.

During that time, Connors,money clips, who befriended O’Connell at Shenandoah Manor, bought items including a camera, computer and a cell phone using money from the woman’s account, according to prosecutors. Connors worked at Shenandoah Manor and O’Connell lived there, prosecutors said.

Connors also made numerous ATM withdrawals and large counter withdrawals from the bank, including $5,000 that she used to fix a roof,cuff Links, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Connors also withdrew $10,000 she said was to prepay for O’Connell’s funeral. The prepayment was actually $7,110 and Connors never returned the remaining $2,890, according to prosecutors.

Conville and Assistant District Attorney Robert P. Frantz each declined to comment on the case after the hearing.

County Detective Dorothy "Dolly" Malec, a member of the Elder Abuse Unit, said the case serves as a reminder about potential dangers in the handling of money.

A Moray farming partnership was yesterday (25 August 2010) fined £13,money clips,500 at Elgin Sheriff Court following an incident where a 13-year-old boy fell through the roof of a farm building and sustained serious injuries from which he later died.

The incident happened on 21 August 2006. Austin Irvine, who was the stepson of the farm’s junior partner, was watching the gutter in the valley between the cattle shed and feed passage roofs being cleared.

He was raised up to roof level in the bucket of a tractor by his stepfather and the boy walked onto the roof. As he walked across the roof he stepped onto a skylight which collapsed. He fell through the skylight, around four-four and a half metres (approximately 13 feet) to the ground and suffered serious injuries from which he later died.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident revealed that there was no proper edge protection on the roof and no measures in place to prevent falls through the corrugated asbestos cement sheeting which made up the roof.

John Irvine and Son, of Inverlochy Farm, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

"This tragedy should never have happened and could have been prevented if John Irvine and Son had properly assessed the risks of working on a fragile roof and taken steps to prevent falls through the roof.

Those who remember 12-year-old Rachel Marie Cusick, who died Aug. 21 after a fire at her Dickson City home, immediately mention her smile.

"Oh, dear God, she’s such a precious little girl," said Marc Luciano of Clarks Summit. He knows the Cusick family from the Crown Flea Market in Eynon, where they had neighboring stores.

Mr. Luciano was just one of the many mourners who came to pay their respects at Rachel’s viewing Friday at Kearney Funeral Home Inc., where the line stretched out the front door. He’s known Rachel about a year and was most struck by "her kindness and her beautiful, infectious smile."

"She was such a sweetheart," Mr. Luciano said. "I’m so heartbroken,Charm pendant, I can barely even talk about it."

Surrounded by displays of flowers and three flickering tea lights was a framed photo of Rachel cradling her miniature Chihuahua, Chloe.

Of course, Rachel was smiling.

Mr. Luciano flips open his cell phone to reveal a photo of his miniature Chihuahua, Clio, Chloe’s littermate. The two dogs would sometimes play together at the Eynon Flea Fair.

Friday’s viewing had subtle nods toward a young girl whose life ended much too soon. The daughter of Patrick and Laurie Schuler Cusick, Rachel would have celebrated her 13th birthday on Sept. 30.

Flower displays were decorated with pink blossoms and pink ribbons. A butterfly replica was perched among the petals of another display. The photo montage played on a continuous loop, to the song "Wind Beneath My Wings." At the end of the montage, the words "forever in our hearts" flashed on the screen.

"I was annihilated," Mr. Luciano said of hearing the news about Rachel. "I was so devastated. I mean,cuff Links, it’s a tragedy."

As of Friday evening, Mrs. Cusick, 40,bangles, and daughter Amanda, 6, were still in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital from the fire that broke out along the family’s 611 Dundaff St. home.

Mr. Cusick and son,Atlas charm bracelet, C.J. Crespo, 16, suffered lesser injuries and were released from Scranton hospitals. A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Eleanore Huddy lives on Lackawanna Avenue in Olyphant, beside Rachel’s mother’s business, Lollipop Lane.

"I can’t tell you how close the family was," Ms. Huddy said. "If you saw Rachel smiling, that’s just the way she was."

Father Richard Burke of St. Ann’s Basilica came to pay his respects Friday. Rachel’s grandparents Bill and Peg Cusick are volunteers and ministers at St. Ann’s.

"That’s all that Bill and Peg talk about, the children and grandchildren,watches," Father Burke said.

They undoubtedly told a few stories about Rachel, always smiling.

No-claims discounts (NCDs) have been offered by private medical insurers for many years, enabling policyholders with the cleanest of claims records to get premium reductions of up to 75 per cent, and cut the cost of private treatment.]]> Individuals concerned about cost-cutting in the National Health Service should be wary of signing up to private medical insurance deals that appear to offer large no-claims discounts, advisers have warned.

No-claims discounts (NCDs) have been offered by private medical insurers for many years, enabling policyholders with the cleanest of claims records to get premium reductions of up to 75 per cent, and cut the cost of private treatment.

Discounts increase for each year that a policyholder does not make a claim, over timescales of up to 7 or 14 years – andpolicyholders are moved backwards on the discount scale if a claim is made.

However, specialist private medical insurance (PMI) advisers say there is a big variety in the types of NCDs offered by different insurers.

"Some insurers start new members on a high level of discount, while others enrol new members at a lower level," said Brian Walters, principal of health insurance brokerage Regency Health. "Equally, some discount structures are more punitive than others,tiffany, with members typically losing between 10 per cent and 25 per cent of their discount for a single claim, depending on the insurer."

Walters added that the the variation of no-claims discounts is a particular problem on price comparison websites. Premiums that appear to be thecheapest in the market might be dependent on the maintenance of a high discount – meaning that the policyholder has to avoid making claims to keep the premium low.

"High starting discounts and sharp falls are likely to result in premium instability," Walters warned.

Insurers are also continually modifying their policies. Aviva has recently given policyholders the option to protect their no-claims discounts by paying a small additional premium. The add-on means that if a claim is made, the policyholder does not drop down the NCD scale on renewal.

These discounts are being offered as concerns grow that the government axe will fall hard on spending in the health sector, with warnings that common operations – such as cataract and hip replacements – are to be rationed.

The Con-Lib coalition government has said it is committed to real-term increases in NHS funding each year. But it is also seeking 20bn of "efficiency savings" from hospitals in England and Wales by 2014.

Financial advisers said that anyone thinking about private treatment will need to make sure that a policy is suitable, particularly if family members are to be covered.

"Bupa and Axa have NCDs for individuals,earrings, while Aviva does not allow child-only policies and would roll the NCD into one policy for the family," points out Gemma Harris, operations director with Chase Templeton, a specialist PMI adviser. "This means that if a child needed treatment on the Aviva policy, the overall cost of the policy would increase. We would recommend a plan which was a per-person policy."

Older people should also be wary of signing up to a PMI policy that penalises them for making claims – as is the case with an NCD contract.

"I would never advise a client aged 55 to 70 to buy a policy with an NCD," says Andrew Tripp, chief executive of Perfect Health,key rings, the brokers. "If you were in this age group, I would suggest saving costs by buying a budget policy that covers in-patient treatment only. The savings you make can cover the incidental costs of outpatient treatment, such as seeing a consultant."

Aviva said this week that it expected its new Healthier Solutions NCD model "to see people choose not to claim for the more minor, outpatient type of treatments in the future".

But it claimed that many customers valued the NCD,cuff Links, stating: "While we appreciate that this will not suit everyone,Beads necklace, customer feedback and the popularity of our other products offering [NCDs] confirmed that many customers favour, and indeed expect, this approach."

Policyholders looking for an alternative to NCD-based plans have other low-cost options. The "shared responsibility" plans offered by SimplyHealth and Western Provident Association (WPA) can cut costs, as the policyholder agrees to pay a set percentage of any claim. This can reduce premiums significantly.

General Medical, Freedom and PHC also have traditional plans that are not linked to NCDs.

Same-store sales and profits rose in the fiscal year ended Jan. 31 and in the 13 weeks that ended May 1. Based in Omaha, Neb., Gordmans is aiming to raise as much as $81 million by listing under the symbol GMAN on the Nasdaq.

"I believe this is the best deal of the week,bangles," says Scott Sweet, managing director of research firm IPOBoutique.com. "These stores aren’t being located next to Nordstroms. They’re selling low-priced, high-end clothing,Atlas charm bracelet, and that is a logical and popular way to shop,watches, especially in the current economic times."

There also is some chatter about Beijing-based Ambow Education Holding Ltd., which aims to raise as much as $128 million by listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AMBO.

The company plays on Chinese families’ growing focus on getting their children into better secondary and post-secondary schools, as well as on skills that will allow graduates to land better jobs. But the deal isn’t a slam-dunk; Chinese IPOs have produced mixed results among American investors this year, and Ambow is competing in a crowded field, particularly against heavyweight New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc., which went public in 2006.

Two technology stocks are also scheduled to debut: Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductors N.V., and IntraLinks Holdings Inc. NXP is seeking to raise as much as $714 million with a Nasdaq listing under the symbol NXPI, while IntraLinks is hoping for $176 million through an NYSE listing under the symbol IL.

IntraLinks is a cloud-computing service that offers businesses a way to collaborate on data and documents online. It controlled an estimated 22.5% share, by revenue, of its niche in the world-wide market last year, according to Gartner, a market analysis firm. NXP focuses on high-performance mixed-signal semiconductors, which combine analog and digital functions.

Both companies may face pricing pressure from investors. NXP and IntraLinks have several years of operating losses and considerable debt relative to their size.

In the case of NXP, the losses date back to 2006 but have been narrowing; it broke even in the first quarter of this year and is expected to book an operating profit in the second quarter. IntraLinks’ operating losses began easing in 2008, but the company warns they could continue in the future and gives no timeline for profitability.

Though semiconductor makers had been issuing positive financial forecasts earlier this year after a severe cyclical downturn last year, there’s a bit of unease among investors as some companies have been scaling back their forecasts, including LSI Corp. and Nvidia Corp. last week. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which tracks the performance of chip-related stocks and made strong gains earlier this year, has since dropped into negative territory.
