Jewelry lost at hotel returned
Lynnae Helland has had her fine buy tiffany jewelry for years and only takes it out at Christmas time. A few pieces are family heirlooms, and all are special to her.
While staying at The Plaza Hotel and Suites, where she spent last weekend for a family reunion, the Eau Claire woman placed the jewelry boxes in a drawer in her room. Helland, 55, became busy with family and forgot she’s placed the jewelry behind a Bible in a drawer.
While unpacking at her Eau Claire home Tuesday, Helland realized she had left her jewelry — valued at more than $3,000 — behind and called the hotel.
“I was just sick to my stomach,” said Helland, who was told her jewelry hadn’t been found. “I didn’t sleep at all that night.”
Still hopeful, she called the hotel again about 7 a.m. Wednesday and was told her jewelry still hadn’t been found, but hotel staff would check with lost and found later.
“I got a call (Wednesday) morning and was told a maid had found my rings jewelry and turned it in,” Helland gushed several hours after getting her jewelry back. “Every single piece was there.”
Sue Weggen and Cheryl Wilson, housekeepers at The Plaza, found the jewelry, which Helland kept in two boxes, tucked in a drawer while cleaning the room Helland had stayed in and turned the boxes and their contents over to Tammy Cook, a housekeeping supervisor.
Cook opened the boxes, saw they contained jewelry, which likely was expensive, and placed boxes and jewelry in a lock box for safekeeping.
“We have a pretty honest staff here,” Cook said. “They turn in what they find.”
Past finds have included digital cameras and iPods left behind by hotel guests.
Cook said it felt good to be able to reunite Helland with her property.
“She was very happy, and she gave us a tip,” Cook said.
Overwhelmed, Helland said she started to cry when she met Cook.
“I hope she gets promoted,” Helland said of Cook, bracelets who has worked at the hotel for eight years. “Everyone there was just fantastic.
“There are a lot of good people in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. If we could just bottle it … ”
