Tonight marked the Grande Finale of the first pan-GCC De Beers Group Marketing Diamond Jewellery Design Competition, following in the wake of the international ‘Diamonds: Nature’s Miracle’ competition.

GCC designers set their creativity free to produce some of the most awe-inspiring diamond valentine’s day jewelry gifts pieces and sets ever seen in the region, valued at over $ 2,000,000. The glittering gala celebration featured eight finalists’ pieces and sets of imaginative and innovative jewellery designs all inspired by one of nature’s most precious creations the diamond.

The event, designed within a luxury venue at a prestigious Dubai hotel, took VVIP guests, hailing from the international and local jewellery industry, through a series of rooms themed around the piece of jewellery on display. From a waltzing bride and groom in one setting, to luxuriously clad models viewing ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ on a cinema-style big screen in another – each intricate design was displayed to highlight it’s individual symbolism.

Anan Fakhreddin, Regional Director of the Diamond Promotion Service (DPS) at De Beers Group Marketing, the largest producer of rough diamonds in the world says, “From its birth billions of years ago to the journey it endured to the surface of the earth, to the legends and myths surrounding it, to its elusiveness and rarity each piece of jewellery captures the diamonds true magic and mystique.

“Diamond jewellery has the ability to capture the heart. It symbolizes love, eternity and glamour, and our Diamond Jewellery Design Competition, as well as our themed gala event was aimed at allowing designers to put their diamond jewellery dreams into reality, thereby highlighting the emerging talent in the GCC jewellery industry.

“Both novice designers and experienced industry professionals were invited to participate in the competition to demonstrate their ability to craft designs specifically for the region.”

To enter, participants were required to draft a design for a new piece or set of diamond jewellery, inspired by Arab culture, under one of five categories listed on the entry form; A new piece of Diamond Jewellery, The Rayana Diamond Jewellery Set, The Whisper Three-Stone Ring, The Bridal Diamond Jewellery Set, Melange and the Black Attraction categories.

The eight diamond jewellery designs chosen to go into the final stage of the competition were silver key rings into actual pieces which went on to be judged by a panel of expert judges including Mr. Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman DMCC, International fashion designer Walid Atallah and Anan Fakhreddin, Diamond Promotion Service (DPS) Director of the De Beers Group Marketing.

The final pieces and sets were modeled at the event alongside Walid Atallah latest designer dresses collection.

Winners who received De Beers Group Marketing trophies include:

Damas with “A Melange and black attraction piece” consists of a choker identical in style to the traditional Agal the black band used in Arabic headdress. The piece makes use of 3635 diamonds and is worth $117 463.50.

Rafi Sarki with “A Melange and black attraction piece” consists of a ‘new generation’ bangle incorporating 7 diamonds set in white gold and fixed at different angles to create an atom-like figure representing energy.

As the fine jewellery market continues to stumble through the recession, a lucrative hole in the sector has been discovered. Bold statement pieces from the likes of high fashion houses Marni and Lanvin, made with little more than a few pieces of coloured resin and a grosgrain ribbon, are growing in popularity with consumers. Many other tiffany designer brands – from Donna Karan to Versace – are keen to exploit this new-found territory.

“There is huge growth potential in this [fashion] category,” says Bridget Cosgrave, buying and fashion director at London boutique Matches, who is aiming her fashion house jewellery ranges at both regular clothes-buying customers and a new fashion jewellery collector who will pay thousands for the newest costume pieces. These include Lanvin’s “Pom Pom” necklace, made with ragged coral grosgrain ribbon and artificial pearls and coming in at a not insignificant pound(s)545. According to Cosgrave, sales of jewellery at Matches have grown 50 per cent in the past two years, and jewellery now accounts for 20 per cent of the company’s total sales. Investment potential and sales could, she says, rise to the same level as bags and shoes in coming months.

Fashion jewellery is one of online retailer Net-a-Porter’s fastest-growing categories; new ranges from Donna Karan, Versace and Isabel Marant are launching this month and will sit alongside pieces from Marni, Oscar de la Renta and Stella McCartney. Browns boutique now differentiates its fine and fashion jewellery offering on its retail website, with Alexander Wang, and two of London’s rising design stars, Holly Fulton and Mary Katrantzou, recently launching statement jewellery collections.

Francois Curiel, Christies’ international head of jewellery, says: “Whereas 15 or 20 years ago silver earrings the fashion houses were doing fashion, now they’re doing jewellery too”.

“The jewellery business is worth something like $10bn a year – before you factor in diamonds – so I guess, yes, they’d like a little bit of that. But also, a fan of Dior feels more comfortable buying a Dior necklace than going through the door of a jewellery house where she doesn’t know anyone and doesn’t feel comfortable.”

Traditional jewellers are surprised at the level of growth of what Charlotte Collard, a Zurich-based model-turned-gemologist, calls the “casual jewellery” or “chic accessories” market. “Diamonds and precious stones have lost a lot of value since the start of the crisis,” she admits. But “to me [chic accessories] are not part of the jewellery world because they usually have no precious materials or stones, and are worn like sunglasses, bags and shoes – they’re made from the same materials. As such they’re never going to appreciate in value, and there is little exclusivity to them.”

This doesn’t seem to deter consumers. As being on trend becomes more important than wearing precious jewels – silver key rings particularly in an era where conspicuous consumption is frowned upon – advances in quick and cheap jewellery production have allowed fashion houses to supply exciting new collections each season. And some do use semi-precious stones. According to Matthew Girling, Bonhams’ chief executive, this leap has been facilitated by production switching from tiny workshops in Europe, where individuals would set stones by hand, to workshops around the world where machines can help to “make jewellery with gems and gold or metals in much larger quantities. Which means you don’t have to wait so long for them, and so you can change to keep up with fashion.”

As a result, the most successful jewellers are those with a foot in both camps. Jeweller Pippa Small opened a store in Los Angeles in the thick of the recession last November and reports demand from actresses and creatives for her fashionable approach to gemstones. Rather than witnessing smaller spends, she is selling “a lot more statement pieces”. “There’s a psychological attitude of getting something beautiful and bold that will make you smile and make you happy,” she says.

And, according to auction houses, these fashion-led pieces may in time prove investment buys as much as silver necklaces traditional fine jewellery pieces are. “There are several things that make something a worthwhile investment,” says Girling, “and with something new it’s often hard to gauge. But if historians look back and there were some good designs that stood out and were deemed to be collectable, some will be worth considerably more in 40 or 50 years. If something is significant or new, people will latch on to it.”

After Tanai and Steve Burke exchanged vows yesterday in the historic courtroom of Town Hall in Hempstead, the newlyweds walked down the aisle through an arch of balloons.

Someone found a folding chair, and the groom slipped the garter from under his bride’s knee-length white dress. They sliced a buttercream cake with strawberry filling and gently fed each other with a plastic fork.

The couple, of Roosevelt, are planning to have a big wedding when they can afford it in a cheap valentines day jewelry few years. In the meantime, a Town Hall wedding on Valentine’s Day was a lovely alternative, said Tanai Burke, 22.

“It’s special and it’s easy to remember for him,” she said of her husband, 24.

They were among 40 couples marrying or renewing their vows yesterday — part of Hempstead’s four-year tradition of upping the romance ante on Valentine’s Day.

“Today is really all about a little bit of fantasy,” said Town Supervisor Kate Murray, who officiated several ceremonies.

After the “I do’s,” couples toasted with nonalcoholic champagne. Brides received red roses and boxes of Godiva chocolates. Pieces of pepperoni spelled “Happy Valentine” on a heart-shaped pizza.

“I always wanted to get married on Valentine’s Day,” said Evie Caldero, 51, of Baldwin, who silver key rings beamed as she wedded the man she’s been with for more than 20 years.

“I thought I’d make her happy,” said Frank Caldero, 57. “It’s Valentine’s Day and I have such a beautiful bride.”

Several longtime loves renewed their vows, including six couples in a single afternoon ceremony.

Earlier, James and Angelina Carbone, both 84, of East Meadow, renewed their union for the second time in their 61-year marriage. Instead of saying “I do” at the end of the ceremony, James Carbone said, “Now and forever.”

Afterward, he said, “You hear those words and you remember what it’s about.”

John and Letha Costello of East Meadow, married 65 years, each clutched a cane as they walked down the aisle after their vow renewal. With their free hands, they held on to each other.

“She gave me three wonderful children,” said John Costello, 87, of his wife, 86.

Jack Costello, 61, of Fort Salonga, stood in the front row as his parents exchanged vows. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment,” he said. “We hope they get another 65 years.”

And in Manhattan yesterday, Yanan Guan, 31, and Michael Zhang, 35, of Selden, were among silver necklaces 13 couples from across the country married on the 61st floor of the Empire State Building. Immigrants from Shenyang in northeast China, the couple was engaged during a carriage ride in Central Park.

Through a contest, they won the chance to match their classic New York engagement with an iconic New York wedding. “It’s a dream come true,” Zhang said. “It’s such a perfect thing.”

Staff writer Sophia Chang contributed to this story.

When Irish-American singer Andy Cooney brings “A Classic Irish Christmas” buy tiffany to Pottsville next month, members of the Schuylkill Council 431 of the Knights of Columbus, Pottsville, hope it will keep tradition alive.

“When he starts singing this stuff, like the old Christmas waltz, the older people are going to remember,” show chairman Joseph “Hap” Anthony said. “You’re going to see memories relived at this show.”

“A Classic Irish Christmas” will be 7 p.m. Dec. 4, in Pottsville Area High School’s Robert Wachter Auditorium.

In addition to Cooney, the show will feature comedian George Casey, soprano vocalist Emma Kate Tobia and the Darrah Carr Dance Troupe. Cooney also travels with a band led by musical director Brian “Bugs” Moran.

Anthony said he ramped up his efforts with Irish shows to fill the void left in 2006 when “The Orange silver earrings and Green Show” an Irish radio program, stopped airing on a local AM station.

“We’re proud to be able to join in with helping to start off the Christmas season in such a positive way,” George Halcovage, Grand Knight with Council 431, said. “This is an area that is truly based in family tradition, and this is a family show.”

This is the third consecutive year that Anthony, who has organized nine Irish shows since 1991, has chaired a Christmas show in Pottsville. However, the headliner and host are both new.

In 2007 and 2008, the Christmas shows with Irish singer Tony Kenny benefited the Ancient Order of Hibernians silver key rings. This year, proceeds will benefit Knights of Columbus charity programs.

Halcovage said the group’s biggest project is the Thanksgiving meal program, in which the Knights deliver hot meals to needy residents across Schuylkill County.

“(We’re giving to) a family who may be having hard times because of the economy, elderly who don’t have anyone around anymore,” Halcovage said. “It’s a manner for us to go out and be an extension, just to wish them a happy Thanksgiving.”

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and can be purchased from any Knights of Columbus member. Anthony said he will be at the Schuylkill Mall 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Nov. 27. He can be contacted at 621-4077 or 544-4674. If you go

What: “A Classic Irish Christmas”

THE mayor of Darlington has recorded his Christmas silver jewellery message for a charity for visuallyimpaired and disabled people.

Councillor Jim Ruck was joined by town crier Peter Stemmer and the editor of The Northern Echo, Peter Barron, to record messages for the Darlington and District Ta lking Newspaper.

Coun Ruck said that, as primary member of the town, he had a responsibility to reach silver pendants every area of society and that it was particularly important to deliver a Christmas message.

The special edition of the weekly audio version of the local newspaper is produced by the Darlington and District Ta lking Newspaper charity.

The charity, run entirely by volunteers, ensures that blind and disabled people have access to the same local news coverage as readers of the newspaper.

The recording, which lasts for about 40 minutes, summarises a week of stories silver earrings for people living in the area and those who have moved further afield.

The service was started in 1979, when it catered for 20 people once a month and stories were recorded onto audio cassette.

The service is now completely digital, available on CD or online via The Northern Echo website.

The audio Northern Echo is now received by about 200 people silver key rings and is free of charge.

In a case echoing the scandals of the 1980s, federal authorities exposed what they claim is the biggest insider-trading ring in a generation — a conspiracy in which a hedge-fund kingpin and executives at blue-chip firms including IBM and Intel allegedly connived to profit on Google and other big-name stocks.

At the center was Raj Rajaratnam, founder of Galleon Group, a New York-based fund firm that manages $3.7 billion. A native of Sri Lanka, he spent years carving a reputation as a meticulous investor in technology stocks, building a fortune estimated at $1.5 billion.

Mr. Rajaratnam, 52 years old, was led away from his apartment in New York’s Sutton Place neighborhood after a 6 a.m. raid by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Hours later, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan charged him and three others with securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and two others with conspiracy. The Securities and Exchange Commission leveled civil charges of insider trading against all six. Friday night, the judge set $100 million bail for Mr. Rajaratnam and lower bail for the others.

The case casts a spotlight on a financial crime — insider trading — with a long history on Wall Street. It is illegal to trade based on corporate information not disseminated to the public. But over the decades, a rogue’s gallery of investors has succumbed to that lure.

The crime erupted in an epidemic in the late 1980s, following a surge in takeovers that put armies of bankers and lawyers in possession of market-moving information about merger plans and tactics. At the center was Ivan Boesky, an arbitrageur who cultivated executives and investment bankers, ultimately paying a $100 million penalty for trading on information from a Drexel Burnham Lambert banker. He served 22 months in prison.

Since the 1980s, Wall Street has changed, with hedge funds acquiring power and influence. But the game of gleaning information still relies on cultivating sources in positions to know corporate secrets. Funds employ analysts and investigators to seek an edge in boosting returns and keeping investors on board. Like Mr. Boesky, Mr. Rajaratnam is an outsider who made it big on Wall Street.

The case against him reads like a thriller. An unnamed cooperating witness, described as a onetime Galleon employee, helped spark the investigation, taping conversations with Mr. Rajaratnam. That led to broader wiretaps that capture the bravado of traders looking for an advantage. Prosecutors said the case is the first to use wiretaps for pursuing insider-trading charges.

The others taken into custody and charged were:

– Robert Moffat, 53, an executive at International Business Machines Corp. in charge of its supply chain, who recently was also given responsibility for its hardware, server and its semiconductor business — and has been considered a potential future candidate for CEO.

– Rajiv Goel, 51, an executive in the treasury department of Intel Corp., who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1983, the same year as Mr. Rajaratnam.

– Anil Kumar, 51, a director at management-consulting firm McKinsey & Co., whom the SEC described as a friend of Rajaratnam and investor in Galleon funds.

– Mark Kurland, 60, of New Castle Partners LLC, a stock-trading hedge-fund group started in 1995 at Bear Stearns Asset Management Inc.

– Danielle Chiesi, 43, a portfolio manager at New Castle.

The complaints allege the group earned $20 million in improper gains. Messrs. Kurland and Moffat were charged with conspiracy but not with fraud.

Mr. Rajaratnam has recorded average annual returns of 21% for Galleon’s biggest fund, soundly beating the S&P-500 index, according to marketing documents. Galleon once oversaw more than $7 billion but shrank last year and faced withdrawals at year end, said a person familiar with it.

Of particular value to funds are insights of executives working directly in an industry, who might provide gossip or “market color.” There is nothing inherently wrong with such conversations, but when information is passed that may affect a stock price, traders and executives expose themselves to potential insider-trading allegations.

Jim Walden, a lawyer for Mr. Rajaratnam, said, “He’s innocent. We’re going to fight the charges.”

Earlier Friday, at a bail hearing, Mr. Walden said that the prosecutors’ theory in the case was novel, noting they had argued in part that Mr. Rajaratnam encouraged an alleged co-conspirator to leave an email trial in order to help conceal the scheme. He said prosecutors and investigators appeared to have misconstrued terms his client used in his business. “They don’t understand the business Mr. Rajaratnam was legitimately employed in,” Mr. Walden said.

Relying on phone wiretaps, the criminal complaint described a period from 2006 and 2008 when Mr. Rajaratnam and his group allegedly swapped information that could move a stock. Wiretap transcripts appeared to show Mr. Rajaratnam working closely with Ms. Chiesi, with her serving as a key link between him and a network of contacts.

Excerpts of taped conversations contained in court filings purported to show rapid-fire exchanges of information, and strategies about how best to trade on it. The wiretaps captured the high-pressure world of hedge-fund trading, as the duo discussed how certain information would weigh on coming earnings announcements of IBM, Akamai Technologies Inc. and others.

The transcripts showed Ms. Chiesi talking with Mr. Kurland, quoting him as telling her in August 2008: “Don’t put anything in email. . . . Don’t email even Raj.”

Mr. Rajaratnam and Ms. Chiesi appeared in filings to have treated their informants like outsourced analysts on their payroll, discussing earnings projections and deal negotiations unknown to the rest of the market.

Plans by Blackstone Group to take hotel chain Hilton private amounted to “a sure thing,” a cooperating witness told Mr. Rajaratnam on July 2, 2007, according to court filings, which add that the hedge-fund manager knew he was receiving inside information.

Galleon Technology Funds bought and sold 400,000 Hilton shares based on tips for a profit of about $4 million, according to court filings.

The complaints allege that an analyst for Moody’s Investors Service, not named in the filings, received $10,000 in exchange for the tip. A spokesman for Moody’s said the credit-rating firm “fully supports the government’s prosecution of insider trading and will provide every assistance in its investigation of this matter.”

What were described as wiretap snippets suggested audacity but also buy tiffany at times nervousness.

“I swear to you in front of God . . . you put me in jail if you talk,” Ms. Chiesi told an unnamed alleged co-conspirator on Aug. 27, 2008, the filings say. “I’m dead if this leaks. I really am. . . . and my career is over. I’ll be like Martha f — ing Stewart.’”

During a call in August 2008, according to the filings, Mr. Rajaratnam and Ms. Chiesi discussed their concerns that their trading would draw regulators’ attention. “On Akamai or IBM, anything, be radio silent,” Mr. Rajaratnam told her, according to court filings. “I’m radio silent,” Ms. Chiesi replied, according to the filings.

The transcripts also showed the two discussing Mr. Moffat, the IBM executive. “silver key rings Put him in some company where we can trade well,” Mr. Rajaratnam was said to tell Ms. Chiesi on a recorded telephone call in September, 2008.

Ms. Chiesi replied, according to the filings: “I know, I know. I’m thinking that too. Or just keep him at IBM, you know, because this guy is giving me more information. . . . I’d like to keep him at IBM right now because that’s a very powerful place for him. For us, too.”

Mr. Moffat’s lawyer, Kerry Lawrence, said his client was “shocked” by the charges. “We look forward to a favorable resolution of the case.” IBM declined to comment.

Charles Clayman, a lawyer for Mr. Kumar, also described his client as shocked, saying: “He is a man of integrity and honesty. He emphatically denies these charges.” Mr. Kumar’s employer, McKinsey, said: “The firm was distressed to learn that Mr. Kumar has been arrested and is looking into the matter urgently.”

A spokesman for Intel, where Mr. Goal works, said he had been “placed on administrative leave silver necklaces as we look into this matter. Intel . . . has not been contacted by authorities.” A lawyer for Mr. Goel couldn’t be reached to comment. Mr. Goel didn’t return a call to his home.

Lawyers for Ms. Chiesi and Mr. Kurland declined to comment. Messages for their employer, New Castle, were not returned Friday night. A spokesman for Galleon said it was “shocked” at Mr. Rajaratnam’s arrest and intends to cooperate fully, adding: “Galleon continues to operate and is highly liquid.”

A Kutztown University senior was majoring in business administration and already making a decent living by selling high-end marijuana to his classmates, according to authorities.

Blase Garrecht got the pot, including some that sold for thousands of dollars a pound, from a contact tiffany who operated out of a used car lot in Wilson, authorities announced at a news conference Monday. He allegedly had another Kutztown student — Joe Finocchio, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice — help him sell it.

The investigation began more than a year ago after an undercover buy from a Kutztown student who identified Garrecht as his supplier and told police that demand for pot at the university was “tremendous,” according to authorities.

Garrecht, Finocchio and their alleged suppliers — three brothers and their mother who worked out of the used car lot in Wilson, and three other men — have been charged in what officials called a $2.5 million marijuana and money-laundering operation that linked New York City, the Easton area and Kutztown University.

“Drug dealers know that there is a strong demand for marijuana on college silver money clips campuses, and they are not afraid to use the students to be their distributors on the college campuses,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett said at his agency’s office in Allentown.

The investigation was dubbed Operation 777 after the used car lot in Wilson that authorities considered the base of operations for the ring, which allegedly sold different types of pot for $1,000 to $5,200 a pound, including Chocolate Thai that went for about $3,000 a pound.

Corbett said Kendell “Sho” Alexander, 30, of Yonkers, N.Y., sent shipments of the high-grade marijuana and Ecstasy pills from New York to his brothers in the Easton area.

Nolan “Smurf” Alexander, 35, of Wilson and Jerome “Rome” Alexander, 33, of Easton operated 777 Auto Sales at 1639 Washington St. in Wilson, which Corbett described as a front for drug trafficking and laundering drug money through the business’ checking accounts.

Jerome Alexander is listed as the owner and the brothers’ mother, Felician Edwards, 59, of 2724 Ohio St., Bethlehem Township, worked at the used car lot and helped launder the money, Corbett said.

The charges throw a different light on a February 2008 incident in which 20 to 25 silver pendants shots were fired in the business’ parking lot. According to Wilson police, Jerome Alexander returned fire on two men who fired at him, and police determined he acted in self-defense.

The dispute began when Nolan Alexander demanded that the men leave for doing drugs in the parking lot, telling them, “This is a place of business.”

Now authorities aren’t sure if that was entirely the case. Senior Deputy Attorney General Heather Adams said the information the investigation uncovered is different from what came out in court. The two gunmen were sentenced to between 16 and 38 months in jail.

On Sept. 24, Corbett said, authorities searched the used car lot and seized $30,000 from the business accounts, 11 vehicles and four weapons.

The lot, no more than a white trailer and a couple of garages, is at the center of one of Wilson’s few commercial districts, which have suffered in recent years as shoppers turn to stores in more convenient suburban plazas. Area business people said drugs will hurt revitalization.

“If we get a reputation for that kind of stuff, people will hesitate to come here, no doubt,” said Hal Raker, owner of Hal’s Small Appliance, Sweeper & Train Shop on Washington Boulevard, just a block from 777 Auto Sales. “This stuff isn’t good.”

Filiberto Cortes, a manager at Taqueria La Plaza, a Mexican restaurant near the lot, said silver earrings Jerome Alexander and his mother, Edwards, were regulars for lunch. Sometimes Edwards would pick up food to go, Cortes said, or Alexander would stop by for a quesadilla.

“They really didn’t seem like suspicious people,” Cortes said Monday afternoon. “It really upsets me that this is happening in this community.”

Corbett said Garrecht, 23, of Easton, regularly received shipments of marijuana from the Alexanders.

He said the majority of the Alexanders’ marijuana was kept in stash houses throughout the Easton area, including one at 1412 Washington St. in the city, where Kamarr Wheeler, 20, lived. The investigation revealed that the brothers kept as much as 25 to 50 pounds of marijuana and hundreds of Ecstasy pills at that home, Corbett said.

Asked about the extent of the drug sales at Kutztown University, Corbett said: “This could have been any college campus.”

Also charged in the case were Shawn Steckel, 24, of Easton and Kamal Morrison, 27, of Bronx, silver key rings N.Y., both with delivering marijuana. All but Morrison are in custody and all except Edwards face a variety of drug and illegal activities charges. Edwards only faces charges connected to money laundering, Corbett said.

Kutztown University spokesman Matt Santos said the school appreciates the efforts to rid the campus of drugs. He added the university is conducting a review of Garrecht and Finocchio, 21, of Easton.

“Our response will be swift and appropriate,” he said.

Reporter Christopher Baxter contributed to this story.
